How Our Bodies Work with Nature

August may be coming to an end soon, but summer isn’t over until the Autumn Equinox on September 21st-22nd. Take advantage of this last summer month by being outside more.

Even when the cold months roll in, we should all still spend time in nature. Our bodies are designed to work together with nature. The natural cycles of light and dark, cold and hot, positive and negative ions, all interact with our cells.

When healthcare, gym workouts, and food questions become complicated, bring it back to basics and use nature to recharge.

How Our Bodies Work with Nature

Sun-gazing to get natural light in our eyes and on our skin stimulates fascia and our circadian rhythms. Infrared and near-infrared rays from the sun warms fascia into sol-state, allowing fascia to release, glide, and move freely. Our circadian rhythm also regulates with early daytime light exposure and light exposure during sunset, telling our bodies when it’s time to wake up and have energy, then when it’s time to wind down.

Walking barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or in a river, lake or ocean are all ways to connect the soles of our feet to Mother Earth. Contact with the natural ground transfers negatively charged electrons into the body, reducing positive electrons related to inflammation, stiffness, and stress.

For more detailed information on grounding, check out my article here:

Breathing around trees lowers stress hormones and boost the immune system because trees filter pollutants and deliver oxygen rich air to our lungs. Furthermore, the color green has been associated with lower blood pressure and heart rate. Trees are a nature’s stress managers!

Listening to birds chirping also lowers stress. This is a major lifehack for those who suffer from constant anxiety, listen to bird songs. The natural melodies act as an acoustic signal to the brain stating safety, which is no coincidence given that birds sing only when their environment is safe and free from predators. The birds singing is a signal that all is well.

So, what did we see here? Look at the sun, walk barefoot, breathe and listen in nature. Simple enough right? This is how our bodies work with nature, body, mind, and soul.

Without nature, our bodies don’t receive these benefits. Staying indoors all the time is unnatural- literally the opposite of nature.

Ask yourself: “How much time do I spend indoors vs outdoors?” Create a balance between both, and when you are outside, make it a point to feel everything you are experiencing. Intentional action and feeling can enhance the experience and the health benefits, going deeper into the body and mind, creating longer lasting results.
